The Legend of the Fan Bird
The fan bird represents the Holy Spirit, the Dove-of-Peace. In early times it was customary for people to surround themselves with items that had meaningful symbolism. The fan bird is one of these.
Traditionally, the fan bird is hung in the home by a string so that it may move freely with air currents. It seems to come alive and symbolizes protection, health and happiness for the family.

The Fan Bird Story as Told by Sally Nye
To the Europeans, the fan bird is known by many names: Holy Spirit, bird of inspiration, dove-of-peace, Christmas bird, Easter bird, chip dove, cuckoo, splint bird, etc.
By the late 1800's, the fan bird seemed to be everywhere throughout Scandinavia and Europe. However, because of the destructive World Wars …borders changed …immigrants were on the move …the fan bird became an almost lost folk art. See our search for history. Even though the Legend remains consistent throughout the various cultures, there are many varieties of Fan Bird styles. See our Our Fan Bird Collection.
